About the role
We are seeking an Assistant Manager to support the existing juniors in the team and work with the senior managers to grow and develop in a progressive and high pace tax advisory team. This opportunity is ideal for someone who has some tax advisory experience but wants to specialise solely in advisory work.
What you'll be doing
- Act as the key contact for clients on advisory projects, with communications monitored and reviewed only where needed.
- Prepare first drafts of main client deliverables (clearances, tax reports etc.) with oversight from management and communications to third parties (legal/finance etc.).
- Act as the primary contact for legal advisors and third-party contacts on advisory projects, with communications monitored and reviewed.
- Have autonomy in meeting and setting deadlines within client expectations and external deadline factors i.e. tax year end, refinancing etc.
- Develop commercial awareness of fee charges and recoverability on tax projects to ensure time spent is commensurate with agreed fees.
- Work with self-awareness of technical/non-technical limitations to flag areas that require closer review.
- Undertake first level reviews for deliverables and communications produced by Tax Seniors, where appropriate.
- Work under guidance from Managers or Senior Managers to determine direction of advisory projects at an early stage, with active input being given in decisions.
- Create output of a level that requires limited input following initial instructions and discussions but will likely still require careful review and oversight in final review stage.
- Attend and take notes at meetings with clients, third parties and internal relationship holders with some active participation where subject matter is known and participation appropriate.
- Ability to interpret meeting notes and requests into advisory project concepts in written proposal form subject to review, with ability to contribute actively to proposals.
About you
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience of working in tax, ideally obtained within practice
- CTA student or part qualified and actively working towards completion of qualification. Completion of CTA a requirement in order to advance to manager level.
- Past management/supervisory experience would be beneficial
- Experience managing and controlling workflows in a practice environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Capability to translate complex theories into plain English
- Demonstrate a high level of commercial awareness
- Project management & leadership skills
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Excellent time management
- Can work well under pressure, hit deadlines and respond promptly to requests
- Ability to undertake self-led research and communicate on increasingly technical tax subjects ensuring familiarity with available resources – legislation/Croner/Practical Law. Provide guidance to tax seniors on this research.
How we work
- Location: Based in our York or Leeds office, with occasional travel to Fortus or venue locations when needed, and so a full driver's license and access to a vehicle would be highly valuable.
- Agile working: We operate a hybrid approach, balancing time at home with time in the office to suit the role and team.
- Hours: This is a full-time, permanent role (37.5 hours per week), with flexibility where needed to support the business.
