About the role

The successful candidate will join Fortus to work across a diverse and varied portfolio of clients, supporting managers with a wide range of in year and year end accountancy and taxation services, offering exposure to meaningful, hands-on work from day one.

At its core, the Senior Accountant role is about being a valued member of our collaborative Accounts & Business Advisory Services team, playing a key role in delivering high-quality compliance services and building trusted relationships with our clients.

What you'll be doing

  • Be the initial point of contact for a small portfolio of clients throughout the year; managing timetables, expectations, anticipating costs, raising fee invoices and agree action dates for cash collection.  
  • Review draft accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies (including those under FRS102, 1A and 105).
  • Preparation of larger more complex accounts for partnerships, limited companies, groups (including those under FRS102 and 1A).  
  • Preparation of more complex or short deadline management accounts. 
  • Review of simple VAT Returns and relevant checklists.
  • Complex, larger VAT Return preparation including relevant checklists.
  • Promoting the use of cloud technology within the client base. 
  • Work with the manager to plan work and deliver to deadlines and provides updates on progress to both the manager and client.
  • Identify opportunities to improve client service, add value and cross service and brings to the attention of the manager.
  • Advise clients on emerging risks, relevant regulatory changes and best practice.
  • Work with increasing autonomy to deliver more complex tasks. 
  • Understand key legislation and accounting standards relevant to their role and applies technical knowledge to deliver high quality work. 
  • Undertake basic technical research for non-routine transactions. Identifies the technical issues and agrees application with the manager.
     

About you

  • ACCA, ACA or ICAS qualified
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience within Practice
  • Experience using key accounting software packages such as Xero, Sage, and QuickBooks, along with a good working knowledge of Excel
  • A solid understanding of UK GAAP and Companies Law
  • Knowledge of current accounting and tax compliance standards, including FRS 102, FRS 102 1A and FRS 105
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with colleagues and clients
  • Strong analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Awareness of recent developments in accounting and tax compliance
     

How we work

  • Location: Based in our York office, with occasional travel to Fortus or venue locations when needed, and so a full driver's license and access to a vehicle would be highly valuable.
  • Agile working: We operate a hybrid approach, balancing time at home with time in the office to suit the role and team.
  • Hours: This is a full-time, permanent role (37.5 hours per week), with flexibility where needed to support the business.
