Service Charge At the races!
28 September 2021
With the COVID19 global pandemic ‘confining us to barracks’ for much of the last 18 months, the offer of a day watching horse racing at Ascot was a very welcome treat for Vicki, myself and the rest of the Service Charge team.
Our team’s based in two offices, 100 miles apart, so to get everyone together in one place is rare and whilst we all speak regularly on TEAMS, nothing beats meeting in person! Everyone had taken the opportunity to dress up and looked amazing. Jennifer and Peppy were both sporting fantastic hats, that Jennifer had customised herself!
Meeting at 11:00AM, those who wanted a tipple started early, as we awaited the first race. Race one saw both Paul and Jennifer backing the winning horse – the perfect start. In the following races, many came close and often backed the second-place finisher, so with the right bets we would have won some money as a collective. Did we? In short, NO! The big winner of the day was Paul, with net earnings of £2.50, yes that’s two pounds fifty, not £250, whilst the rest of us bowed our heads in shame having all made losses. That’s why he’s the boss.
As the day progressed, we were lucky enough to have avoided the rain that was forecast (for the most part) which, in reality, was our only gamble that paid off! Following the races, the day was capped off by DJ sets from The Mac Twins and JLS’ very own Marvin Humes, followed by the headline act, Sophie Ellis-Bextor. You didn’t misread that! Highlights included a cover of ‘Like A Prayer – Madonna’ and of course, ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ and she was exceptionally good – as various displays of dad dancing confirmed!
Despite the misfortune on the gambling front, a great day was had by all. Getting everyone together outside of work was invaluable for boosting both working and personal relationships; for Vicki, it was a chance to be able to have a face to face catch up for the first time in the best part of two years, whilst for myself, it was an opportunity to properly meet everyone. The cherry on top, was the outstanding venue and entertainment!
Thank you to everyone who arranged the outing!
